Mom and Dad would take all of us kids (5 of us) and half the neighborhood on family night. Never had so many kids packed into the station wagon. :D Dad would pop up 2 or 3 big pans of popcorn and put it in a paper sack and we would take bottles of soda for each of us. Of course this was all hidden on the floor in the back. Us kids would sit on the hood and top of the car or out on the little bits of grass. The little ones would be put to bed on blankets in the back of the station wagon.
Cheap entertainment - I think it was $2/carload on family night. We always had a good time.

My favorite memories of drive ins (circa 1956) are not fit for a public forum.
There is still one operating in the town next to us.

Sunny,
You brought back so many wonderful memories of those days gone by.
We too had a carload. 5 kids in the family with Mom and Dad, we were dressed in our pajamas and had a ball at the playground that was there, and then we didn't worry so much about someone stealing us.(Thank God)
The popcorn in the big brown bags, made me smile. I still think of that often.

Peter,
We had a new drive-in theatre built last year. It was very popular the first half of the season, but the novelty of it wore off.
It was built in a flood plane surrounded by trees and bordered by a creek. It was a mosquito's delight. I think the heat and the pestering insects have gotten the best of them. The owners have been trying to keep afloat with the weekend daytime flea markets, but it appears that the demise is eminent.
It didn't help that a company just opened a brand new 10 screen theatre with stadium seating this year.

When I was a kid (small) my Mom and Dad took us to the movies almost every weekend. We had choice of 3 theaters and 2 DRIVE-INs. The 7 of us usually preferred the drive-in. I don't know if it was because of the movie showing or if it was the more relaxed atmosphere. They used to throw cardboard "flying saucers" from the top of the screen into the crowd. The saucers had numbers written on them to identify the "prize" that you won. Usually there would be a very nice prize for a particular (random) number. When I got to high school I began working at the movies, and worked every job from janitor to ticket tearing, to concession stands and finally to projectionist. Of all the jobs, I liked the drive-in the best. Great memories of guys and gals trying to sneak into the drive-in in the trunk of a car, getting to see who was dating who, seeing all the happy faces at the concession stand......My fondest memories are etched in stone (my head), mostly from the drive-in!
The drive-ins are gone now and there is only one theater (where I worked 45 years ago) but I'll always remember the ROCKET DRIVE-IN.

There is still one Drive-In left at a nearby town. It's slowly been selling it's acreage off to industrial developers.
I have no childhood memories of family trips to the Drive-In's, but I have plenty of memories of waiting in line for the vehicle checks during my teenage years. B-) The "inspectors" never thought to look between the cheap plastic bedliner and the body of the truck. It could hold quite a number of bottles back there. :O The older Jeep CJs also had this awesome little storage area under the passenger seat that people were not aware of. Oh and Honda's with all their extra storage compartments spread around the car....
A group of teens and some lawn chairs and blankets spread out in the back of the truck was lots of fun after a day spent working hard at the race track nearby. With enough alcohol, all the boys and girls were oohing and ahhing over Jessica Rabbit on the big screen.
The rest of the Drive-In memories are a blur....
