Even the Las Vegas show is much smaller than I remember it being years ago.
I'm sure that's because, with the expense of exhibiting, suppliers pick venues that generate sales.
Case in point: I remember seeing a Multi Cam routing system one year. It was amazing. Vacuum table that could hold down sheets of thick acrylic, THROUGH A SHEET OF PLYWOOD!!
It cut acrylic blanks like butter, at various depths. I was fascinated!
Neat piece of equipment, but not one you would find in an average awards shop.
Haven't seen that company at ARA since.

Ken,
I'm sorry we didn't get to meet and I'm glad you didn't get lost.
We too walked the show in a very short time. We did take advantage of some show specials. We then spent some time talking to vendors. The show was poorly attended so there was plenty of chat time. One of my long time vendors said he and some of the exhibitors were saying that are not coming back because they did not make their expenses. I hope we will not see the demise of the local shows. I agree with David that even the LV show seems smaller than when we first went. This has been even more apparent to me at gift shows. The shows have become so expensive for exhibitors that they are looking for alternative ways to get their message out.
I talked to 2 people who said they attended Roy Brewer's seminar and they gave it high marks. We were sorry to miss it. I hope he does EE live and that we are able to go.

When your store and kiosk do more business while you are at the show than the show vendors do, I can understand the reluctance to return next year. ;-)

It is a vicious circle... Those in the business get the information about the shows. They already know MOST of the players so the show is primarily of benefit to new suppliers to get some recognition. It can also serve to give hands-on introduction of the new products that we were told about in hundreds of emails promoting the show.
The consumer just searches for the end product and doesn't really care WHO they buy from if the price is right and the picture looks good on the web.
The mind set seems to be: "ANY of the name brand engraving systems are fine. We don't need no steenkeen support. Oh, and if they don't sell me an engraving system, maybe they will engrave the blanks for me."

Dee,
The message I just wrote disappeared when I hit "post". My two biggest disappointments were not getting an engravingetc badge and not meeting you and Harvey. I'll have to make the time to stop by your store one of these weekends.
Do you think the cost of exhibiting is too high due to the cost of renting the space, or the hosting organization is getting too greedy for its own good.
After last year's show I felt it was worth going again. After this year's, I'd question that. A lot less variety/selection. I want to see different materials, equipment, applications... Not another 3 vendors selling the same wood plaque. I go to learn what's out there and what's possible.

I have a few people who I've promised badges to.
Once those obligations have been met, I'll send however many are left, to whoever may want one of these highly-coveted, 2006 EE collectible items. :-)

David, could you post a picture of the badges. I would love to have one but mostly just want to see what they look like.
Thanks
Bill

Nice. Thanks for the pix. I couldn't see it very well on the pictures from Vegas.

Ken:
I hope you went back by the booth. Epilog's marketing guru (and the gentleman who supervised the design, engraving & handing out of the badges) was out of pocket (at another trade show, I believe) and there was a bit of a communication mix-up with the folks who were running the ARA/New Jersey booth.
We THINK that everyone else who went by the Epilog booth was able to pick up a badge. Sorry for the confusion!

Thank you for clearing up the issue of the badges.
"In by 12 out by 2" is great.
I was in by 8 Thurs. out by 3:45 on Friday. I took advantage of all the classes. you really learn alot. If the classes weren't on Sat. I would have stayed for them as well.

Jeanette,
Not being in the market for another laser, I saw no point in going back to the booth when 2 people knew nothing about the badges. That is where I ran into Mr. C. from the forum. I don't know if he ever went back.
