Hi all!
Anyone ever tried to laser on a blown egg? A blown egg being one that has holes on either end and the yolk and white blown out of it?

Several years ago, I bought a huge box of blown eggs at a yard sale for $5 (don't ask..it involved a little old lady) Anyway, I have never quite figured out what to do with them and wondered if they lasered well?

I have found some sites that say they used a laser on their eggs.

I've seen a few sites showing engraved eggs and saying they are lasered. But they weren't shown by the people that did them. Just people that liked the images. I ran across some of the same images on other sites that said they were engraved with a dremel tool.

On the other hand, I did see an egg shell lasered on the site of an industrial laser company. It was not a full shell, but had the back half removed. I'm guessing because the laser probably blasted through the front and hit the back while out of focus.

No idea what type of laser they used, so it may not be the same wavelength as the typical laser engraver.

If you've got the shells, I'd say give it a shot. (maybe with a sheet of cardboard under it to catch the bits if it doesn't work)

Todd tried it around Easter Time. It didn't stick in my head so it much not have been as great as we thought it would be. But then I don't remember taking a lot of time working with it either.

CBS is now having advertisements lasered on uncooked white eggs using lasers (34 milliseconds to engrave). I company out there has already patented laser marking fruit (I know, I don't understand the patent either)

I have also heard about carving eggs with a laser, seen a couple of samples, but was unsure if it was lasered or ???

Do I sense pumpkin carving reaching an all new level :P

We should start a thread on what have we tried to laser - worked or didn't work?

During the cigar fad, I met a laser owner who told me he did over 100,000 that year personalizing cigars and the boxes they came in. The engraving on the cigar looked great.

I know this thread is a little old, but I thought I'd revive it since I did try lasering a brown blown egg this week-end. Either I was doing something wrong, or this was one tough chicken. My 30W LaserPro required 100%P, 50%S to cut through that egg. Maybe white eggs are easier to laser through? I'll try to remember to take & post a picture of it before it get destroyed.

Vicky - don't give up - this market has great potential. I just finished my first one myself. I have attached a photo. Please do not make fun of it since it only my first try. I can only hope I get better at this.

:-$ Well, your first try is a darn sight better than mine was! Not sure where the market would be for this sort of thing, though. :S We did it just for fun because of the season, we had family in from out of town and wanted to give them a fun demo, yadda, yadda, yadda. Was your egg as difficult to crack as mine was? Or do white eggs laser more easily than brown? Store bought? Mine came from a "free range" chicken, which might explain why it was so tough. :P

Eggs vary in thickness, due to breed and the amount of calcium supplements they receive. Free range usually get enough calcium to make a good thick shell.

I'm not sure what the potential is though , I'd be inclined to make sure I had other work , wouldn't want to put all my eggs in one basket. :P I think I get eggsasperated trying to package them, and duck the issue. do you send them Fed Eggspress? :S

Now if that doesn't get a bite from Dave (Stunt Eng), I don't know what will.

Did you use your rotary attachment on that? How in the world did you get your design all the way around the circumference of the egg?

Yes, the rotary attachment would have been used. Eggs are surprisingly tough. We used a little double-sided tape to keep the egg from slipping in the rotary attachment.

I cant see how a rotary attachment could have been used on that egg , or in fact , a laser? Im talking about the one in the pic on the stand , maybe I'm missing something here?
