I was in the store, the first week of this month, picking up some back-to-school items for my Daughter.
I couldn't help but notice the "Lawn Reindeer" and other non-perishable Christmas props on display.
Thinking way back, I remember when Christmas displays used to pop up close to Thanksgiving.
Then, it became common to see holiday displays going up shortly after Halloween. Then, before Halloween.
My back-to-school trip to Costco, sets an all-time record for witnessing a retailer's hastiness to launch the Christmas shopping season.
Since I hadn't been in the store for weeks, who knows?
The Christmas displays may have been set up in August! :-)

David,
Speaking from the mall point of view you are correct. Years ago malls all put up their own Christmas displays on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving so it would be there for Black Friday. As the displays became more complex the "hanging of XMAS" was handed over to companies. There are only a few of these companies and many malls so it can not all be done on the same night. Now it is common to see XMAS start the day after Halloween.
BTW, As the economy worsens more and more mall companies are doing "center court displays" and little or nothing throughout the mall.

Some people in my neighborhood have already adopted that practice with their outdoor Christmas lights, despite a city ordinance against the practice.
What could be easier? Just plug the lights in, for a few weeks per year. :-)
As you say, the stores are sure to be right behind.

What we need is strings of lights with color control.
Change em to pink and white for valentines day, red white and blue for the patriotic weekends, pastel for easter, and whatever your joy is for Christmas.

I'm lovin' that all-season solution. :-)
Actually, it doesn't seem that far-fetched. :S
