Jeff,
With a quantity of "a few hundred" is sure sounds like a job that would pay to outsource to someone with a foiling press.

Or IF you think you would like to add this to your repetoire, look into buying a foil press for yourself and let this order cover as much of the cost as possible.

I will look at this option. I trying to look at all available avenues in this.

Is foil stamping or embossing a very involved process? Where would be a good place to start researching this equipment and process?

Just remember that for real leather you need a special foil. The brass foil usually referred to as gold turns green really fast from the tannic acid in the leather.

I must be leading a charmed life. In decades of foil stamping, I haven't seen the green gold. Or, I guess I should say, haven't produced any.

I originally used Kingsley 24K, then what they called their "crossover" foil.

Kingsley went out of business quite a while ago, but www.aamstamp.com seemed to take over where Kingsley left off, in the Los Angeles area..

I've since been using a satin Bronze (B21002) foil from M. Swift & Sons, (Hartford, CT) which does a good job on paper products and leather.

Their satin foil has more of a powdery consistency, as compared to a glossy foil.

If I remember correctly, the reason it was called 'crossover' was because it was not 24K foil, which works great on leather, but would not tarnish either.

I would not do leather because my hot stamping mentor said that the normal gold brass foils that I had would turn green within three weeks.

I've tried the gold laser foil on leather, and in my opinion NO it does not work, it does not stick well enough.
