Michael

My location is in a mall. I am currently displaying for signage for use in stores and car graphics/'stickers'.

What I think my problem boils down to is that I do not display any copyrighted material. I have been to flea markets and even a huge auto add on store and their displays are mainly copyrighted cartoons. I cannot believe how blatant the displays are of other peoples property. I go on Internet searches and the same thing. Disney, WB and the rest. How they get away with it is beyond me.

Harvey:

Doesn't seeing the display of copyrighted material just drive you nuts??? I just went to a craft show last weekend and couldn't believe how many people were using various logos and such. But I did hear of a local guy who was caught by a univerity for sandblasting rocks with their mastcot. Not sure how that all turned out.

I just spoke with a lady yesterdy who does embroidery work and asked how she's able to use copyrighted things. She said she's licensed through her embroidery software and had to sign a lot of paperwork stating she WILL charge for her work and she WILL NOT give it away for free - doesn't that sound backwards??? She said she doesn't have to report her sales or pay royalties but she just can't give things away!

I try to be very careful about everything and would like to become licensed for various logos and such if it's not outrageously expensive. I did get an appointment with the local hockey team so I'll have to see how that goes.

Sounds like a load of BS to me. She just gave you a line in my opinion.

Some people think that just because they can get the logo/graphic that they are allowed to use it.

The only possibility of truth is that she got it backwards, possibly by convenience.

Yes, my *opinion* is strong on this one.

Edit: Spiel chicken problems.

Not gonna rant like I'd like to on this subject. I hope saying," I hate those lousy thieves" is sufficient.

I happened to run across this old post of yours and had a *few comments.
I did some contract work in embroidery for a company in Bloomington, IN. that did lots of college work. At this time, the Indiana University Basketball team was in the final four. For them to print shirts on "IU-final four 2001 or whatever they had to pay a royalty to a company that HAD a license with the NCAA. Even though they had a license with IU, the NCAA tournament was a different deal. If they had won, then ownership of the NCA tournament champions went to IU. I believe they paid this company $2.00 per shirt for the ones they PRINTED, not SOLD. These guys were on it, to the point of checking puchase invoices of shirts, all sorts of details. The license with IU came with lots of follow up and checks. You don't play with these guys money, course colleges are about the strongest around. There's a big movement here for them to get Secondary schools who are using college mascots and logos. That's a no-no that many violate. I see all kinds of these American Chopper insignias and I KNOW these guys aren't seeing all of that.
