Full Version: The Adventure Begins: The arrival of the Chinese Laser

The adventure begins.
I received the laser.
I received package 1 of 2 on Friday the 9th. The other package, the laser, was suppose to be delivered on the same day according to the tracking info. Stayed home all day to make sure I was there to sign. Called UPS at about 6 pm to ask if it was still going to be delivered. No package after 8pm. Tracking info updated later still to say package was left in facility, etc.
I left for Florida on Saturday. I had asked to make sure it would not be delivered during the days I was gone.
Put the package on hold from Florida. Picked up the package on Thursday.
I will figure out the time it took to get it from the time I ordered it later.

The first package had me really worried!
It is a small box and when opened I thought it came from a flea market.
Here are some pics:

The first box had the following:
Aquarium pump
Bathroom exhaust fan
120 to 220 volt transformer
Blue hose
Everything does work.
I was stumped with the aquarium pump for a while. There are 2 hoses coming from the laser and only one attachment point on the pump. After reading the badly translated chinese, I figured it out. The pump is submersible and only need the in line hooked up, the out returns to the water container.

It took me a little while to get the pump working. I plugged it in and it just hummed. I could shake it and get it to start pumping only to have it stall. Started looking for a replacement pump, could not find any pumps that can pump water like this one. Most aquarium pumps pump air into the tanks, they don't circulate water. But I finally looked at the label on the pump it is a 220 volt pump. Ah, that is what the transformer is for, hooked the pump up to the transformer and it worked!
I hooked up the water pump tubes and checked the laser tube for water flow as instructed. I had good water flow.
Opened all the covers to make sure nothing had come lose or broken in transit. Everything looks ok except what I think is the Y axis. The arm is not parallel to the table. I play with it a little and am able to get it aligned by slipping the belt. All of the connectors are siliconed in, which I do myself on stuff. It is easy to peel off if needed but holds things in place.
Plugged everything in and turned on the laser. I am able to fire the laser with the test button on to a piece of tape. Everything is working so far.
I will do another post with the software installation. The software is Moshi. It uses a USB thumb drive for a dongle. It is mostly english. The help files are in Chinese.

I forgot to post pictures of the laser packaging and the laser itself.
The packaging was ok. Cardboard box with sheets of styrofoam and then wrapped in bubble wrap.

Interesting. We'll look forward to more of your observations.
Note: If the photos were resized to a smaller size, they wouldn't require so much scrolling, in order to see the entire shot. It's easier to see the thumbnails (although very small) than the pictures themselves.

I saw the aquarium pump and thought you had an underwater air assist! I was jealous!!! ;-)
Enjoy your new laser!

Hi Steve
As an aside, if you are ever looking for a submersible pump in the future, search Google for marine aquarium equipment. There is often a sump below marine fish tank that the water is filtered into, a submersible pump sits in the sump and circulates the water back up to the main tank. You will find loads of pumps available .
Good to hear you got it running anyway.

Did the boy wearing the Mickey Mouse shirt pop out of the box when you opened it or was that just a marketing opportunity?
What is the size of the laser, power and table??

I will have to check that out. This pump looks cheap. It may last a while but I think I will start to scope out a replacement.

More general information:
This is suppose to be a 40 watt laser.
The engraving area is 250 x 200mm. But the clamp is 200 x 128mm.
These are numbers that the seller publishes.
Here are a few more pictures, first one is the electronics and the other 2 are of the tube:

I have moved on to the software. I have engraved a few graphics on some test material.
I am having a hard time finding the starting point of the laser. One thing that is throwing me off is the direction of the table.
The top of the software is up like a normal page but the lasers top of the page is to the left. So everything is 90 degrees off CCW.
There is no scale on the table, I may have to put something in there to help me, at least in these early stages.
The clamping device is ackward. It is a spring loaded bar. The bar slides toward the top of the table, not the top of the page. There might be a way to change the top of the page in the software but I haven't found it yet. I will post pictures.
First picture is the clamp, second is a blurry picture of a tag.

Steve,
It may just be my computer, but I'm not able to see any of your pictures...have they been removed?
