Gut feel is that the import filter on Corel 12 only goes up to the CS2 version 8 files.
At least you have figured out how to get it into Corel.

Corel X3 claims to be Illustrator CS2 compatible. It is still buggy. If you export to a CS2 (supposedly) file, CS2 usually barfs. I have a fair amount of difficulty Importing CS2 stuff but it "Opens" just fine.
Coral 12 is pretty much compatible up to CS (that would be Illustrator 11).

Adobe made a major change in the way Illustrator saves files when they made CS2. Before that Illustrator files were based on EPS. Now they are based on the latest version of PDF. I suspect this is why some programs have problems with AI CS2 files, and older programs that came out before CS2 don't understand AI CS2 files at all.
